L'Oréal Fashion Week

Article Written By: Amanda Huynh
It's that time of year again…the hustle and bustle of an audience filing in, the sound of flashes going off and the heart thumping bass of the music. The event’s advertising campaign “who are you wearing?” is fronted by model Anna Lorin. Ads have appeared in international publications such as Vogue, Allure and GQ, providing immeasurable exposure for the nation’s most innovative designers and fastest rising models.
This Monday marked the start of Toronto’s L’oreal Fashion Week, produced by the Fashion Design Council of Canada with exclusive back stage coverage by Elle Canada. The week is sponsored by over 30 top companies including Ford Canada, the tourism board of Ontario, and the House of Grand Marnier. The five day extravaganza gives Canadian designers a chance to display their Spring/Summer 2008 collect to an audience of potential consumers, a plethora of media personnel and their peers. There are 43 shows scheduled to grace the 61 meter runway over a frenzied period of just less than 45 hours, with very little time for last minute delays.
Previously held in grandeur spaces like Liberty Grand and Muzik night club at the exhibition place, Nathan Phillip Square seems to pale in comparison. The change in venue has caused “Toronto’s Fashion Community”, as they like to call themselves, to publicly protest the 30,000 square-foot tent that has been erected to house the event. A similar tent and presentation style had been used by fashion god Michael Kors in some of his New York shows.
Despite highly publicized criticism, FDCC President Robin Kay stands by her decision to hold the event in a more central location. Nathan Phillip Square is located at 100 Queen Street West, between Osgoode and Queen subway station. Tickets are on sale to the general public for $20 per show or $50 for a day pass.
Some clothing lines are opting to forgo the official Fashion Week festivities all together and take direct aim at their target market group by putting on late night shows at some of Toronto’s hottest clubs. Promotion companies Kleen Media, Dynamite Events and Adnan Media are no strangers to hosting high profile after parties for the biggest events in Toronto, and they have all done it again, offering a week of exciting club events and tantalizing fashion shows. The following is a list of events designed to tickle more than your fancy and entice even the most sound of mind to undergo some retail therapy.
